FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING FASTING
In our clinic, we encounter many questions from our guests about therapeutic fasting every day. Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions.
What are the benefits of therapeutic fasting?
Therapeutic fasting promotes physical and mental health in various ways. The deliberate abstention from solid food relieves the metabolism and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and calming effects on the autonomic nervous system.
Additionally, fasting positively influences the immune system and hormone balance. It also improves insulin sensitivity, which can be beneficial for individuals with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Some people report enhanced mental clarity and an improved mood during fasting, which may be attributed to the increased production of ketone bodies and their associated neurological effects.
Who offers therapeutic fasting ?
Therapeutic fasting is offered by specialized fasting clinics, health centers, and some wellness facilities. The Malteser Klinik von Weckbecker provides a professionally supervised fasting program led by doctors and therapists.
Why you should fast at Weckbecker ?
The Weckbecker therapeutic fasting method is based on the proven four-pillar concept developed by Dr. Erich von Weckbecker in 1958. He was inspired by the approaches of Otto Buchinger, Franz Xaver Mayr, and Are Waerland. Over the years, his concept has been further refined and adapted to modern knowledge and lifestyles.
At its core, the method follows Buchinger fasting, which consists of consuming herbal teas, vegetable juices, and broths. These vegetable broths and juices provide essential vitamins and minerals during the fasting period.
Weckbecker’s holistic therapeutic fasting combines the Buchinger method with additional essential elements that comprehensively support the fasting process on physical, mental, and emotional levels:
-
Manual Therapies: A broad range of treatments, including physiotherapy, osteopathy, and specialized massages, promote physical regeneration.
-
Exercise and Relaxation Programs: Movement and relaxation activities support metabolism, detoxification, stress reduction, and overall well-being.
-
Water Applications and Wraps: Daily hydrotherapy treatments and wraps based on Sebastian Kneipp’s principles stimulate metabolism, circulation, and the lymphatic system, strengthening the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. These treatments enhance detoxification and elimination processes, supporting the immune system.
-
The Unique Weckbecker Colon Bath: This special, gentle form of colon therapy effectively supports fasting by flushing out metabolic waste products through a mild cleansing of the large intestine.
Additionally, the fasting therapy is complemented by offerings in spirituality, life coaching, and mindfulness, reinforcing its holistic nature. Many individuals experience heightened sensitivity during fasting, and suppressed emotions may surface. Our counseling sessions and courses provide guidance in processing personal matters and addressing important life themes.
The uniqueness of Weckbecker’s Holistic Fasting lies in both its comprehensive approach and its individual customization. The fasting method—whether juice-broth fasting, intermittent fasting, alkaline fasting, or therapeutic nutrition with an organic alkaline diet—is tailored to each individual’s specific conditions, constitution, personal biography, and life circumstances.
How can you fast at home ?
Therapeutic fasting at home requires careful planning. Light, liquid foods such as broths, teas, and fresh juices should be prepared in advance, and it is essential to thoroughly understand the process and necessary steps of fasting. Additionally, a saline laxative such as Glauber’s salt or a similar product is needed for bowel cleansing.
Fasting at home is generally more suitable for individuals who have prior fasting experience and are in good physical health.
Who is therapeutic fasting suitable for?
Therapeutic fasting is ideal for individuals looking to improve their health or prevent illness. It is particularly beneficial for those with chronic conditions who wish to activate their body's self-healing abilities. Additionally, fasting can help normalize metabolism and enhance overall well-being.
People seeking a mindful and holistic approach to health, along with access to a wide range of effective therapies, will find our therapeutic fasting program especially valuable.
Who should not undergo therapeutic fasting?
In certain cases, a stay at our clinic is not possible. This primarily includes individuals with psychiatric conditions such as severe depression, suicidal tendencies, anxiety psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and delusions, Dementia or those requiring nursing care, alcohol or drug dependency and/or Anorexia.
Additionally, fasting is generally contraindicated for individuals with advanced heart failure, unstable angina pectoris, unstable heart arrhythmias, impending kidney failure, high risk of falls and/or complex and multiple food allergies or intolerances.
If you are uncertain whether fasting is suitable for you, we kindly ask you to contact us in advance. In a confidential consultation, our doctors can help determine whether and under what conditions a stay at our clinic may be appropriate.
How many fasting days are recommended ?
The duration of therapeutic fasting varies depending on individual health conditions, personal goals, and experience, typically ranging from 7 to 21 days.
What happens to the body when fasting ?
During therapeutic fasting, the body switches to a mode of internal cleansing and regeneration. Fasting triggers a series of complex biological processes that encourage the body to utilize stored energy reserves, activate cellular repair mechanisms, and promote anti-inflammatory effects.
However, it is essential that fasting is conducted under medical supervision to avoid complications and maximize its benefits, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions or health risks.
Why is bowel cleansing important during therapeutic fasting?
Bowel cleansing during therapeutic fasting helps empty the intestines, allowing metabolic waste products generated during fasting to be quickly eliminated. Additionally, it can help reduce the feeling of hunger, as hunger originates not in the stomach but in the intestines.
How much weight can you loose during therapeutic fasting ?
Weight loss during therapeutic fasting varies, but it should not be the primary goal. The focus is on internal cleansing and overall health improvement rather than just shedding pounds.
How to prevent bad breath during therapeutic fasting ?
Brushing your teeth regularly, using a tongue scraper, and drinking plenty of water can help reduce bad breath during fasting. Chewing on a slice of lemon can also provide a refreshing effect.
What biochemical processes happen during therapeutic fasting ?
A key phenomenon in fasting is the conversion of energy production from glucose to ketone bodies. This process begins after just 13 hours without solid food:
In the first few hours of fasting, the body uses its stored sugar reserves in the liver and especially in the muscles as the main source of energy to maintain the vital glucose level in the blood.
If the sugar store is empty, glucose is produced by ‘proteolysis’, i.e. the breakdown of (often deposited) protein molecules, preferably from connective tissue, blood vessel walls, liver, pancreas and intestines. This process reaches its peak after 48 hours of fasting and then slowly decreases again.
The body then switches to producing energy from fatty acids. In the process, fat cells are converted into ketones. These ketone bodies not only provide energy particularly efficiently, but also activate important enzyme systems in the body.
A central mechanism that is activated by the ketone bodies during fasting is autophagy. During this process, the body's cells eliminate damaged or outdated cell components that are no longer needed and even recycle some of them. This self-cleaning and self-repair of the cell makes a decisive contribution to keeping the organism healthy.
What to do against hunger during therapeutic fasting?
Drink plenty of water and herbal teas to reduce feelings of hunger. Distraction and light activities can also help. An integral part of any Weckbecker fasting therapy is therefore the so-called ‘DoRest program’. It offers the fasting patient the perfect balance of exercise (‘Do’) and relaxation (‘Rest’) in a varied programme of courses and with wellness offers such as sauna and swimming pool.
The Weckbecker colon bath (colon therapy) offers further help: By gently flushing the colon every day, metabolic waste products are eliminated more quickly. With this therapy developed by Dr Erich von Weckbecker, feelings of hunger and headaches that sometimes occur during fasting can be avoided or quickly alleviated, and the daily colon therapy means that most of our guests no longer feel hungry by day 3 at the latest.
